Migraines aren’t as simple as they sound. Migraines have a mind of their own and they come and go at their own will. Anyone who’s had a migraine will know that pain, nausea, and sensitivity to sound and light accompany a migraine.

I have had to suffer from migraines since I was a teenager. I had such intense pain that it was unbearable at times. I even visited a neurologist in Lahore to find out if there was an underlying cause for the insufferable migraines. But to my luck, migraines just liked me.

For migraine, the key is to avoid any and all known triggers and to take prevention medication. But sometimes even that doesn’t help. So here a few tips to ease the migraine pain that actually does work.

A Dark, Quiet Room

Since a migraine comes with sensitivity to light and sound, resting in a dark, quiet room can ease the migraine pain and help you sleep. When you are sleeping, your brain releases chemicals that can lessen the pain. A dark room might not always help you sleep, but it can ease the pain by blocking light and sound.

Hot or Cold Compress

Placing a hot or cold compress across the forehead or the back of the neck. I prefer cold compress because it distracts me from the pain. Hot compresses are mostly used for back pain or cramps. Cold compresses have more of a numbing effect and they stimulate other nerve endings detracting the brain from migraine pain.

Scent of Lavender

Lavenders are specifically known for relaxation. The scent of lavender has a calming effect on the mind and body. Any form of lavender such as drinking lavender tea, or inhaling lavender, or using lavender essential oil can reduce the severity of the headache. It also eases the mind and may help you sleep.

Drink Plenty of Water

Migraine can also be triggered by dehydration. Imbalance of electrolytes can cause migraines. Usually staying hydrated and replenishing the lost fluids can balance the electrolytes. You can also drink water with a slice of lemon or lime or squeeze a lemon in the water.

Massage is a great way to relax and relieve stress. Massaging the temples usually helps lessen a migraine. For some people touch can be sensitive, so they can avoid the massage and just relax how they usually do.

Mindful meditation is a great way to ease the mind and take the stress away, take a few minutes every day to sit in silence and meditate. Concentrate on breathing and vanish all stressful or any thoughts from the mind. Mindful meditation can actually be very helpful for chronic migraines.

Acupressure is also another technique to ease migraines. The pressure is applied with fingers and hands to points on the body specific to relieve pain. People who are sensitive to massages can try acupressure to relieve the stress and ease the pain. It might also help with nausea accompanied by migraines.

Yoga and Exercise

Few yoga poses and aerobic exercises can vanish headaches and therefore migraine. Yoga promotes a healthy body and mind and well-being. It also improves anxiety, relieves you of tension and stress, and has an overall calming effect. Yoga is an alternative therapy that has been found to be very useful. It mainly focuses on breathing and meditation.

Avoid Trigger Foods

Your diet can easily be the trigger of migraines. High sodium foods or processed foods can be one of them. Carbonated drinks, chocolate, foods with nitrate in them, alcohol, monosodium glutamate, and some variety of cheeses that contain tyramine can trigger a migraine. So it is better to avoid such foods.

Say No to Stress

Stress is a major factor that contributes to migraines. Even If you have a dull, throbbing pain, stress can add fuel to the fire and increase it by ten-fold. The best way to stop the onslaught of migraine and to vanish the pain is to keep calm and avoid all types of stress. Carve time for yourself and do the activities you enjoy. Have a relaxed weekend and ease away the pain.
